83% of households in Sub-Saharan Africa lack access to improved sanitation (WHO/UNICEF JMP- Progress on Sanitation and Water- 2015 Update and MDG Assessment).  Furthermore, most of the countries in the region failed to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of halving the proportion of the population without sustainable access to basic sanitation between 1990 and 2015.
